Artiom Zuglin made aliya in 2003 coming straight to Kiryat Shmona, a town located a few kilometers from the town of Metulla, which hosts the only so far Olympic-size ice rink in Israel. His mother Natalia has been often asked if the move to a rather remotely situated place was connected with an opportunity for Artiom to become a skater. Natalia assured me it was a pure coincidence but the penchant for rhythmic movement to music seems to be part of the family: Artiom's elder brother was a competitive ballroom dancer in the Ukraine.
A talk with Artiom shortly after his win at the Israel Nationals 2008/09:
-Artiom, who suggested you try figure skating?
-It was through a friend of my father. He suggested I give it a try. I got to like it straight away.
-During the Nationals you were fighting for every jump. Are jumps your favourite elements?
-Yes, I like jumps most. It's exciting to do them and to do them well.
-How do you pick the music for your programmes? Do your coaches select it for you?
-They usually bring a piece of music to listen to, and then we make a choice together.
Artiom's mother joins the conversation:
"We're trying to give Artiom the support he needs to continue training and competing. We've been often asked if we settled in Kiryat Shmona having a skating opportunity for Artiom in mind. It's just a coincidence but we're happy it's worked well for him."
Coach Alfred Korytek comments:
"Artiom has got all double jumps, and we're starting to work on the triple salchow to have at least one stable triple soon. He's going to the Lubjlana Cup in Slovenia in February, which is his first international competition. He needs more ice time to stay at least on current form, but he's got the character and the potential to be a good skater".
